About SAMRO

Southern African Music Rights Organisation was formed in 1961 and is established as management society of copyright assets. The main purpose is to protect intellectual properties of African music creators by licensing musicians, organizing music fees and distributing royalties to the musicians. Through the foundation, SAMRO Foundation, the organisation has provided overseas scholarships and bursaries to hundreds of talented young people each year since 1981.

Available Fields of Study
SAMRO bursaries are open for registered university students that take the studies in the following list:

• General Music Study: Jazz Popular or Western Art or African Indigenous Music genre, for second year students. Worth R10 000.
• Music Education or Community Music Study for students majoring in the courses in third and fourth year of study, each worth R10 000.
• Music Business or Music Technology for students majoring in one of these specialized subjects in the third and fourth year of study, each worth R10 000.
• Performance Study: African Indigenous Music or Jazz Popular or Western Art genres for students majoring in Performance Study in the third and fourth year of study, each worth R10 000.
• Composition Study available for students majoring in Music Composition in the third, fourth and post-graduate years of study, each worth R10 000.
• Indigenous African Music Research for post-graduate research students at Honours, Masters and Doctoral level.

The Criterion For Bursaries
SAMRO bursaries has several criterion set to qualify the interested applicants and the criterion are:

• Applicants must be South African, Botswana, Lesotho or Swaziland citizens with valid ID
• Applicants are currently registered or studying toward a music diploma or degre at a university in South Africa
• Applicants must provide the proof of registration at South African university
