About the Position
SARAO has an exciting opportunity for a Commercialisation Specialist with a Mechanical Engineering background to join our Cape Town based team. The successful incumbent will support commercialisation of SARAO technologies through creating an active link between the development teams, the commercialisation unit and external stakeholders.
- Degree qualification in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering
Minimum work experience required:
- 1-year experience in Technology Development, Innovation, product development or Commercialisation.
Duties include (but not limited to):
- Identifying intellectual property which can be commercialised through regular interaction with MeerKAT development teams
- Conducting preliminary evaluations through patent searches
- Refining existing and new product/systems, and supporting development towards product readiness
- Developing and conducting research into new product directions to meet customer needs
- Providing engineering support as the product enters the commercial phase
- Conducting technical and market assessments
- Assisting in the definition of project scope and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility
- Preparing project budgets
- Analysing project risks and opportunities
- Ensuring all projects are delivered on time and within scope
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive project documentation
- Closing out projects
Ability to:
- ensure compliance to all Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) regulations
- display excellent interpersonal skills
- take own initiative to develop funded industrial collaborations
- communicate effectively (written and verbal)
- display excellent information retrieval, critical evaluation and analytical skills
- display willingness to respond positively to the needs of colleagues in the various units of SARAO and those across industry
Experience in:
- bidding for and securing funding
- leading/facilitating the development of project scopes/plans
Knowledge of:
- and understanding of the barriers to commercialisation and the means to overcome them

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) spearheads South Africa’s activities in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, commonly known as the SKA, in engineering, science and construction. SARAO is a National Facility managed by the National Research Foundation and incorporates radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT and KAT-7 telescopes in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) programme in nine African countries as well as the associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours.
