PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To oversee the management of the mill to maximise production output, return on investment, return on assets, quality production, sustainable manufacturing and safety of employees and contractors. Also, be responsible for operations, compliance, maintenance, efficiency and financial performance of the mill. This does not include product sales or raw material purchases

REPORTING TO: VICE PRESIDENT, MANUFACTURING, R&D AND ENGINEERING

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Work with Manufacturing VP and other mill managers to devise the medium and long term manufacturing plans for the region. Translate the long term objectives into execution plans at mill level.
  • Motivate changes in business plans and directions based on production, customer or macro issues.
  • Oversee the compilation of fixed cost, variable cost and capital expenditure budgets for the mill. Present to the VP and regional CEO for approval.
  • Monitor progress against business plan weekly, monthly and quarterly.
  • Approve recommendations made by heads of department for major changes in operations or engineering.
  • Evaluate proposals from engineers or technical teams for new projects (upgrades, de-bottlenecking or expansion) and oversee the development of the business cases. Present for approval.
  • Ensure mill compliance with all environmental regulations, ISO standards and Sappi standards.
  • Drive the continuous improvement of production processes, optimisation programmes and energy efficiency drives.
  • Ensure adherence to Sappi group and regional policies, procedures and best operating practices.
  • Maintain plant capacity rates by benchmarking equipment performance standards and providing adequate engineering and support personnel to perform the activities necessary to meet the standards.
  • Keep defects and downtime to a minimum by way of established investigation, communication and correction programs in line with company standards for these activities.
  • Build relationships between production and engineering teams for optimal collaboration.
  • Participate in contract negotiations for key deals if requested by sales and marketing.
  • Attend to complaints from key clients and monitor complaint resolution for all clients.
  • Regularly engage with sales teams to determine product demand and client feedback.
  • Identify new business opportunities such as energy generation, new product using waste or wood fibre adjacent projects. Work with the technical teams for feasibility and further development.
  • Engage with key suppliers around purchasing agreements for bulk input costs in conjunction with procurement.
  • Drive transformation in the mill in relation to employment equity, gender diversity and skills improvement.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • A 4 year degree in any discipline, provided that the candidate has significant proven leadership capabilities
  • Post-graduate diploma in business management
  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience in an industrial environment, preferably in the pulp and paper industry
