The South African Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH) is an NGO that aims to coordinate, monitor and promote services for persons with intellectual disability, psychosocial disability, as well as to promote mental health and well being for all South Africans.
Job Title: Advocacy and Campaigns Coordinator
Job Location: Gauteng
The purpose of the position is to provide direction, expertise, and leadership in the successful management of SAFMH’s advocacy and campaigning activities, along with generating and managing mental health-related information for use in campaigns. The person will take responsibility for directing the organisation in terms of new and innovative methods of ensuring social justice for mental health care users through periodic and / or ongoing campaigning activities. At the core of this position is the need to have a 360° understanding of the mental health sector, mental health care users, and how to strategically empower and mobilise these individuals at a local, national and international level through innovative national and international programmes.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop, implement, monitor and evaluate a range of advocacy and campaigning programmes
- Design publicity, educational and awareness materials and strategically utilising these to advocate for the rights of mental health care users and raise awareness of mental health issues at a local, national and international level
- Utilise in-depth knowledge on mental health, advocacy and human rights to develop innovative, fit-for-purpose strategies, interventions and campaigns to help raise awareness about and capacitate the mental health sector in South Africa
- Develop and manage national advocacy projects and campaigns related to the empowerment of mental health care users
- Support and help coordinate the work of the South African Mental Health Advocacy Movement (SAMHAM) and mobilise them into actively becoming involved in provincial, national and international advocacy activities
- Liaise with media, government departments, partner organisations, stakeholders, corporates and other stakeholders about the promotion of mental health messages at a national and international level
- Work with mental health care user groups, families, professionals and other stakeholders to actively advocate and campaign for the rights of mental health care users and increased mental health resources at all levels
- Contribute to SAFMH’s social media and website platforms
- Budget and project management
- Report writing
Requirements:
- Energetic, outgoing and vibrant person to drive advocacy and campaigning in an enthusiastic and innovative way
- Fulfil an outward-facing role in the organisation and would thus be required to be professional, presentable, flexible and an outstanding and reliable ambassador for SAFMH
- Domestic and international traveling might be required, so a willingness and ability to travel at short notice is essential
- Relevant qualifications such as degree in Psychology or Media Studies
- Public speaking, presentation, facilitation and event management skills
- Minimum of three years’ experience at Project Manager or equivalent level
- Experience in advocacy and campaign development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation is essential
- Extensive experience of dealing with all forms of media
- Experience conceptualising large scale campaigns
- Graphic design skills
- Literacy and written and admin skills are essential
- Communication skills and the ability to liaise with and relate to a wide range of audiences
- Experience and knowledge of the mental health and disability sectors in South Africa
- Critical thinker and able to use initiative and work autonomously
- Organised, adaptable, enthusiastic and results driven, with a passion to make a difference
- Project management skills
- Valid driver’s license
