Department of Civil Engineering
In the department of Civil Engineering, we conduct research leading to a Masters and Doctoral Degree in Civil Engineering.  A 4 year degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline (Final pass mark of 60% and above) is the minimum entry requirement for a Masters degree, while a Masters degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline is the minimum entry requirement for a Doctoral degree. Our key research areas are in the disciplines of Water and Environmental, Structural, and Transportation Engineering:

  • Water and Environmental Engineering: Water Resources Management and Planning, River Basin Management (Including water quality and quantity modelling), Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies, Rainwater Harvesting Techniques, Run-of-River Studies for Hydropower Generation (Green Energy) and General Water Use Abstractions and Solid Waste Management
  • Transportation Engineering: Road Construction Materials and Transportation Planning
  • Structural Engineering: Concrete and Masonry, Bridge Engineering, Alternative Building Materials and Techniques
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Our mission is to be locally relevant and internationally competitive, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) places high emphasis on quality research, and considers the creation, application and transfer of knowledge as one of its major functions. The Department responds to the needs of the country by proactively contributing to the shaping of the future.

Department of Industrial Engineering

Masters degrees:
Minimum requirements
A B Tech: Engineering: Industrial degree or a NQF level 7 Bachelor’s or Honours degree in Industrial Engineering; obtained from a South African University. Mathematics II and Research Methodology are prerequisites.

Duration
Minimum of (12 Month) if you are doing it full time and maximum three years if done part time.

Doctoral degrees:
An M Tech: Engineering: Industrial degree or a NQF level 8 Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering; obtained from a South African University.
Duration
Minimum of 2 years and Maximum of 5 years.

Masters degrees:
A full time (minimum12 month) programme which requires the completion of a full research dissertation with a focus on advanced design, engineering management, and innovation. This program may be done on a part time basis and in consultation with the Department.
A structured program (minimum12 month) which can be done in three areas of specialization: Telecommunications, Control & Image Processing, and Power Engineering. The program consists of coursework and a research project.
International Master of Science Programs
An 18-month, full-time, international programme with a focus on advanced design, engineering management and innovation. The program is managed by F’SATI. Currently the focus areas of the program include Telecommunications, Control and Image Processing (MSc Electronics), and in Power Engineering (MSc Power). This program requires a student to fulfil the requirements of an M Tech at TUT as well.

Doctoral degrees:
A full-time (minimum 2 years) program which requires the completion of a full research thesis. This program may be done on a part time basis in consultation with the Department.  A Cotutelleψthat is managed by F’SATI may also be done in which students have the opportunity of doing a research project in conjunction with a French partner Institution.
A program that allows students to have their doctoral studies supervised jointly by academics from a South African University and a French University
