Packaging Machine Operator

Productivity

Packaged toilet rolls or paper towel according to specifications.

  • Operate the relevant packaging / wrapping machine at the required / established speed
  • Load code sticker, packaging and/or wrapping material at the required rate
  • Identify any machine problems and report them to the shift team leader
  • Perform critical machine settings in order to operate the relevant packaging / wrapping machine at the required rate.
  • Relieve other packaging / wrapping machine operator(s) during their absence
  • Prepare and ensure that code stickers, packaging / wrapping materials are ready to be loaded at all times
  • Ensure that all raw materials required for packaging / wrapping are available within the required time.
  • Perform the relevant machine or product “change-over” within the required time.

Core-winder Maintenance

Minimized production time lost due to breakdowns

  • Work closely with artisans during breakdowns and planned machine maintenance
  • Ensure good and acceptable housekeeping in and around work area at all times
  • Identify any machine problems and report them to the shift team leader
  • Perform operator schedule autonomous maintenance (Inc. scrapping and lubrication)
  • Perform any other reasonable Asset Maintenance related tasks

Ensure Healthy and Safe work environment

Zero Risk Audit findings, Zero incidents, Hazard free work environment

  • Ensure good Housekeeping in and around the machine at all times
  • Perform machine pre start inspections and record the results in the inspection sheet
  • Report any deviations found during pre-start inspection to the team leader immediately
  • Report any unsafe condition and acts to the team leader / safety rep.
  • Use or wear approved PPE at all times

Ensure that quality requirements are met

Reduced number of complaints, Zero quality audit findings

  • Perform quality checks by visual inspections and by doing the necessary measurements as prescribed by the product specification
  • Work with team leaders in closing NCR’s and CAR’s
  • Reject all non-conforming materials and product as per rejection procedure
  • Return all unused material to the demarcated “Return bay” at the end of the current run
  • Perform duties in accordance to the ISO Quality Management System and any other company process requirements.

Ensure good Management of the Costs and Material Usage Variance

Scrap percentage to be within the allowed maximum of 3%, Ensure maximum usage of consumables

  • Ensure that code stickers, packaging / wrapping materials are used to the core
  • Ensure good machine settings
  • Ensure that weights of scraped products / material are recorded at the bailer machine before or at the end of the shift
  • Report all material spillages and damages to the team leader
  • Where possible, salvage any good quality product by reworking it through relevant packaging line
  • Ensure that any rework done during the shift is recorded properly in the relevant log book

Requirements

FORMAL QUALIFICATION

  • Grade 12 and/or N3 Technical qualification (NQF 4)

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Should have operated similar machine for a period of not less than one year

DESIRED BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic numeracy
  • Pendant operated Overhead Crane license
  • Basic understanding, writing and communicating in English
