What is the Missing Middle?
The recent #FeesMustFall campaign by students succeeded in highlighting the funding challenges facing all local universities, which resulted in the government and university leaders responding to some of the concerns. However the interim solutions brought in sharp focus the need of our “Missing Middle” students.
Support the Missing Middle
The average total cost of a year’s study at UJ, which is one of the most affordable South African universities, currently stands at R85 000 — including tuition and residence fees, books and a limited living allowance.
The “Missing Middle Campaign” aims to raise at least R60 million by the end of 2024.
Nearly R31 million had been raised by 28 February 2024, including a personal donation of R200 000,00 by Prof Rensburg, as well as R100 000,00 that was pledged by the university’s Students Advisory Council. Executive Deans of Faculties have also jointly pledged R550 000,00 to the fund.

In order to give fitting exposure to the organisations and individuals who will have made pledges, UJ will build a “wall of fame” in which a plaque will be attached to a brick signifying the donor of that brick
