UNISA Biology Course Module 2024 – 2024

Basic Biology – BLG1501
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 5 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: To enable students to obtain an understanding of basic biological concepts with regard to the physical and chemical basis of life; cell structure and functions; cytogenesis; cell metabolic principles; and ecological principles.

Animal and Plant Diversity – BLG1502
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 5 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: To enable students to obtain a: (a) Basic understanding of the form (anatomy) and function (physiology) of animals (invertebrates and vertebrates) with regard to respiration, nutrition, homeostasis, reproduction, etc. (b) Basic understanding of the structure (morphology), function (physiology) and diversity (systematics) of selected representatives of the Kingdoms Monera, Protista, Fungi and Plantae.

Basic Biology (Extended) – XLG1501
Under Graduate Degree Year module NQF level: 5 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: To enable students to obtain an understanding of basic biological concepts with regard to the physical and chemical basis of life; cell structure and functions; cytogenesis; cell metabolic principles; and ecological principles.

Biology Practical – BLG1603
Under Graduate Degree Year module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English,Afrikaans
Co-requisite: BLG501 (or XLG1501) & BLG1502 (or XLG1502)
Purpose: To enable students to be able to demonstrate the ability to recognise and identify structures and functions of cells, tissues and organs and have insight into the classification of plants as well as the significance of plants for sustaining life on earth. Students able to identify, classify and make fully labelled drawings of selected algae, mosses, gymnosperms and angiosperms and be able to compare morphology, reproduction and adaptations as well as demonstrate an understanding of South African plant biomes and biotic composition of selected aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Students will also be able to describe basic laboratory techniques used in genetic experiments.

Biological Research Methodology – BRM4701
Advanced Diploma Year module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Purpose: This module forms part of the Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation. On completion of this module students will be able to differentiate between various types of data and conduct basic statistical analysis of data. Furthermore, students will be able to interpret statistical test results and evaluate them critically. This module provides fundamental knowledge and practical statistical skills which will provide support to research in the field of Nature Conservation. Students registering for this module are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet in order to download or read essential study material from the myUnisa module site and world wide web. This module will be presented online, and no study material will be posted for this module.
