To apply for the BA Fine Arts 1st Year, the following must be submitted:
 

 

  • ii) to the Michaelis School of Fine Art:
    A portfolio of recent artwork in the form of a PDF emailed to michaelisportfolios@gmail.com, and 4 original artworks on paper posted to the school. Please note exact portfolio requirements below.
    A completed Portfolio Submission Form posted with the original artworks;http://www.uct.ac.za/downloads/uct.ac.za/apply/forms/ba_finearts_form.pdf
    A statement of motivation (250-500 words) as part of or attached to the Michaelis Application Form. This statement must motivate why you want to study Fine Art, and indicate your future goals. Portfolio
Recent Artwork
The portfolio of recent artwork must include no more than 10 individual works in a range of media including colour (10 works and optional 3 detail images).
Each artwork must be labeled in the following format: Number Image; Surname; Title; Date of production; Size (cm); media
 
The following criteria will be taken into account when assessing the portfolio:

  • Conceptual and creative thinking
  • Observational skills
  • Experimentation

 
These artworks, with your name, title of each work and medium, must be submitted in a single PDF file, not exceeding 10MB file size to admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za.
This is an unmonitored email so do not email this address with queries.
Please note that if you chose to submit your portfolio in this way, you will still have to submit the four hard copy original drawings mentioned below, under ORIGINAL ARTWORK. These must be original (no scans, photocopies etc.
 
If it is difficult to email a PDF of your Portfolio of Recent Artwork, it may be sent to Michaelis with your original artworks in the following ways:
 

  • flash drive
  • CD
  • photographic prints or colour photocopies no larger than A3 (30 x 42 cm)

 
If your work is on a on a CD or flash drive please check that your CD or flash drive is working and is formatted to be read on all computers (MAC and PC) BEFORE submitting it with the rest of the portfolio. Do not adhere stickers to the CD.
 
Original Artwork
You are required to submit 4 original A3 size (420mm x 297mm) drawings on paper in at least two different media such as pencil, charcoal, pen or brush. These drawing must be from life and NOT from photographs or traced and must include the following:

  • Self portrait
  • Still life
  • Figure or animal study
  • Architectural or landscape study

All work must be clearly labeled (printed) on the reverse side of the drawing and packed flat between two sheets of card in standard A3size envelope (458mm x 324mm) available from any stationers or Postnet.. Please do not send oversize works.
Applicants submitting portfolios should NOT include original work that they need for assessments and examinations in October / November / December, as the portfolios will only be returned in late January. We cannot return work until the portfolio process is completely resolved.
The committee reserves the right to call the candidate for an interview should the need arise.
No correspondence shall be entered into regarding your application.
Incomplete portfolios will be a disadvantage to your application.

Collection of Portfolios
Please note that we do not return any portfolios by post or courier. Unsuccessful applicants who wish to keep their portfolios must arrange to collect them from the Secretary’s office, room 1 Michaelis building, Hiddingh Campus by 28 February 2024. We reserve the right to dispose of portfolios that are not collected by 28 February 2024. Successful applicants can collect their portfolios in the first week of term or during orientation week.
Students applying for transfer from another tertiary education institution:
Please send your portfolio to Michaelis School of Fine Art and submit an application to the University of Cape Town simultaneously. Please include copies of your transcripts and tell us in your motivation letter what year you would transfer to. Also please mention what majors you imagine pursuing.
