UP | Top 100 Women Bursary Event 2024
The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT) presented its first bursary event for women on Saturday, 12 August 2024 to honour the top 100 Grade 12 women who applied to study engineering at the University of Pretoria (UP) and were admitted to EBIT programmes for 2024.
The Dean of the Faculty, Prof Sunil Maharaj, officially welcomed the prospective students (and their parents) to the EBIT generation. In his presentation titled ‘#Choose UP’, the Director of the University’s Client Service Centre, Mr Wallace Isaacs, reported that the School of Engineering at UP is ranked among the top 0.5% in Thomson Reuters’ International Science Index-Essential Science Indication. This is an important indicator of the quality of education engineering students receive in this faculty.
To encourage women to take their rightful place in the EBIT programmes, the Dean concluded the event by offering each of the 100 invited future students a registration incentive for 2024.Ms Shireen Chengadu, the Acting Director of the Department of University Relations (DUR), was the guest speaker for the day and emphasised the need for females to aspire to realise their dreams, regardless of their background. She used her own life journey as an example.
Parents and students who attended the event provided positive feedback. One of the students, Chané Nel, said: ‘Thank you so much for this inspiring morning. I feel honoured to have been offered a bursary and I am extremely grateful for being afforded the opportunity to study engineering at Tuks from 2024. This morning’s speech not only inspired me to become a successful engineer, but also to use my passion for mathematics to change people’s lives for the better. I am very excited about becoming a student and I feel more motivated than ever to sit down and study for my final matric exams.’
