Department Description The Unit for Undergraduate Medical Education (UUME) in the School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications from suitably qualified medical doctors, who have a true passion for medical education for appointment to a part-time (80% – 4days a week) post.
Main purpose of the job
The main purpose of this position is to provide clinical skills training and assessment to medical students in the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) at Wits Medical School. Additional duties are specified in the “Key performance areas” section below. The post is aimed at developing the skills, knowledge and experience of young South African clinicians who have a keen interest in undergraduate medical education. The post is part time to specifically enable the post holders to still be clinically active on their off days (to do locums, etc.)
Key performance areas
· Preparation and delivery of teaching activities, teaching materials and online materials to support the delivery of the clinical skills programme in the GEMP course.
· Participation in assessment processes of UUME such as OSCE and MCQ assessments, including setting and marking of these. Training and support will be provided.
· Be prepared to work and teach in a variety of settings/wards and distributed clinical skills units as the need arises and as directed by the Director of UUME.
· Act as mentor and role model to the GEMP students
· Assistance with faculty staff development through workshops to train staff and simulated patients.
Minimum requirements to apply for this position:
· MBBCh (medical doctor) degree from an accredited South African University
· Registered, and in good standing, with the HPCSA as an Independent medical practitioner
· A South African citizen
· Evidence of a passion for medical education
Abilities, qualifications or experience that would be an advantage in your application
· Experience in teaching undergraduate medical students.
· Any postgraduate qualifications in medical/health professions education
· An ability to speak two or more (includes English) of the eleven official South African languages
Desirable personal abilities of the successful applicant
· Passionate and enthusiastic clinician who is still clinically active
· Positive work attitude and keen to engage with students
· Good administrative skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
· Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of the UUME team
· Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
· Good interpersonal skills, tactful, respectful and non-judgmental and punctual
