Department Description
The Social Work Department is located in the School of Human and Community Development in the Faculty of Humanities at WITS University. The Social Work department has about 300 under-graduate and 50 postgraduate students and is committed to quality professional training of social work practitioners and researchers. The applicant would be joining a well-established and vibrant department that is socially responsive to the local and global context. We are currently advertising a post at Professor / Associate Professor Level, within this department.
Brief Description
Duties will include course coordination and administration, and undergraduate and postgraduate lecturing, field instruction and research supervision. The duties also include active research in Social Work, as well as keeping abreast of aspects of research theory and practice and societal developments that are relevant to the discipline and profession of Social Work. This level of seniority of post also generally requires mentoring of all levels more junior staff and make contribution to aspects of management of the department and school.
Applications are invited from candidates meeting the following qualifications and criteria which are aligned with the university’s three core areas of work responsibility: research, teaching and service.
Those qualified for appointment as an Associate or Full Professor are required to hold a doctoral level degree (or equivalent), and to have demonstrated teaching, research and service competence.
Teaching
Teaching, supervision and assessment experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels is strongly desirable. The applicant should provide evidence of their teaching and assessment philosophy and expertise such that their previous experience in this area and the quality of their contribution is apparent. The Applicants’ should demonstrate the capacity to design and develop appropriate course content and teaching strategies and to link teaching to research. The applicant should also be proficient in understanding the particular demands entailed in offering high quality, board approved professional training in Social Work. Given that the advertised position involves teaching and assessment within the context of the degree programme in Social Work, it would be of benefit to the applicant to be a registered Social Worker. Evidence of graduate supervision experience is also required, preferably at both masters and doctoral level.
Research
Research expertise is considered vital to this level of academic post. Research expertise will be assessed with special emphasis on ongoing research activity as well as the evidence to initiate and independently conduct research in the field of Social Work. The scope, extent and quality of research expertise and outputs will be taken into account. Provision of evidence attesting to the applicant’s research ‘footprint’ and profile would be useful. The evidence to initiate research projects, to apply for grant funding and/or to take leadership in a research capacity should be evident.
Service/Administration
This is a senior position and thus, administrative and service expertise will be assessed in relation to the capacity to demonstrate strategic and operational planning and leadership capabilities, staff management skills, and the ability to lead and to work collaboratively within teams. Evidence of general service within academia and/or the profession of Social Work and/or within related organizational settings would also be of value.
Remuneration: In accordance with qualifications and experience in relation to the university pay scale.
Commencement date: The successful candidate will be required to commence on 01 September, 2024
